Growing up a queer lad in a heavily Catholic community was definitely a struggle, let alone growing up Catholic in a Protestant dominated society. He was impressed into the Royal Navy early on, only to be abused by a higher officer and left resourceless in a Caribbean port. After that he used his anger and sailing proficiency to work his way up the social ladder in the pirate's republic.
